This week’s blog assignment focuses on a very important part of educating childcare professionals. As educators of young children we must keep up with the ever changing policies, trends and issues facing the early childhood profession.

The organization that I chose was National Head start Association. The mission and vision  of the National Head Start Association  is to lead - to be the untiring voice that will not be quiet until every vulnerable child is served with the Head Start model of support for the whole child, the family and the community - and to advocate - to work diligently for policy and institutional changes that ensure all vulnerable children and families have what they need to succeed.( http://www.nhsa.org)  The following table shows everything that the organization does to help improve in the lives of the families that serve.

The issue that caught my interest was the increase in the funding of the Head Start program despite the budget cuts by the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Labor Health & Human Services, Education, and related Agencies passed their FY 17 funding bill.  Despite the bill cutting $570 million overall from last year’s FY 16 level, the bill included a $141.6 million increase for Head Start and Early Head Start allocated to support programs and the Head Start Workforce meet rising operating costs through a Cost of Living Adjustment.(http://www.nhsa.org)
I can truly say that I am very honored to be a part of this great organization as both an educator and a grandparent of a child that benefits from the program. I must also shout it out that I am a product of Head Start. I attended the program as a child. It is a great program that set the standards and introduced the need for early education and family support in the lives of every child no matter what their economic, family and life circumstances are. Head Start works to educate and care for the whole child as well as the entire family unit.

  1. Thank you for your insights this week LaShawn. Since I live outside of the States, I have never really heard of Head Start, untill I started my Masters Program at Walden and realized how many teachers, students and families it has supported throughout the years. I am glad to hear that you have had great success experiencing the program as a child and even now having the insights to be a part of this great organization! Keep up the great work <3

  2. Have you seen changes in the Head Start program over the years of your involvement? You're so lucky to have lifetime participation in such a wonderful association. I am not aware of any Head Starts in my area so I am excited to learn more about the association through your eyes.
